Studies on bird migration are of critical importance for conservation, and bird banding, or bird ringing, is one of the most important and oldest methods of migration studies. BNHS Bird Migration Study Centre located in Point Calimere, Tamil Nadu, was established in 2008. Point Calimere is an important destination for migratory birds like the Great Knot, Red-necked Phalarope, Bar-tailed Godwit, Oriental Pratincole, Blue-face Malkoha, Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Sandwich Tern, Oriental Darter, and many more. The centre is unique in India and researches migratory bird patterns, thus aiding in their conservation. BNHS started the first bird migration project in India in the late 1920s; since then BNHS has ringed more than 3,00,000 birds.
During this camp, participants will spend time with BNHS field scientists and have the rare opportunity to observe various bird trapping, handling and ringing techniques. You will also help in gathering data vital for scientific research. This will be your chance to live the life of a researcher. The camp will enable you to observe migratory birds up close, you will learn as well as give back to research.
