Understanding the Sea
Author, B.F. Chhapgar, a renowned marine biologist, was a curator of the Taraporevala Aquarium in the 1950s and 60s and later, Research Officer-in-Charge of the Taraporevala Marine Biological Station. A prolific writer, he has authored 12 books and over a hundred scientific papers and popular articles. He has discovered three new species of crabs, two new mantis shrimps and a fish previously unknown to science. Nearly three-quarters of the earth's surface is covered by the sea. The sea os not just a huge body of salt water. It is acted upon by various physical and chemical factors. These combine to form a complex web which takes scientist s many years to unravel. The book covers a wide range of subjects, from winds, waves, tsumanis, tides and currents to biological phenomena like biorhythm and bioluminescence to seamanship and maritime lore written in simple language easily understood by the layperson not conversant with basic sciences.
