Kondana Rat

1.         Ecology and assessment of the conservation status of an endemic and Critically Endangered Kondana Soft-furred Rat Millardia kondana in the northern Western Ghats, India, through participation of the local community.

Objectives:

a.   To assess the distribution and conservation status of the Kondana Soft-furred Rat.

b.   To estimate population density of the species at Sinhgad, Rajgad and Torna Fort; and

detailed analysis of population dynamics, home range and habitat utilization of the species at Sinhgad.   

c.    To monitor impact of forest fire, Roof Rats, domestic cats and other carnivores on the

      species at Sinhgad.      

d.   To develop the conservation management plan of the species.

e.   Strengthen the network of local educational institutes, the Forest Department, local NGOs and Gram Panchayat for implementation of conservation management of this species. 

 

2.         Distribution and assessment of the population status of Critically Endangered Kondana Soft-furred Rat Millardia kondana, with special emphasis on implementation of the conservation management plan at Sinhgad.

a.      Determination of identity of the species by using morphological and molecular data. 

b.      Distribution and assessment of the population status of Critically Endangered Kondana Soft-furred Rat.

c.       Develop landscape level conservation management plan for the species.

d.      Capacity building among the forest staff for monitoring and implementation of

         Conservation management of the species.
