Certificate Course in Entomology

Introduction:

Certificate course in Entomology is a hybrid course with online as well as face to face activities interwoven through the course work. The course content is developed by subject matter experts. Course assignment includes online submissions and field trips.

What are the benefits?

As the name suggests, the course will provide opportunities to develop basic skills required for entomologist among the participants. The participants will be provided information through the chapters, online discussions and field activities. They will get opportunities to interact with SMEs and learn about their works. As a part of the course, each participant will carry out documentation of local insect fauna which results into a compilation of scientific publication.

On successful completion of the course participants will receive a certificate from BNHS.

Who can enroll?

Anyone with an interest to learn about insects and its conservation is eligible to apply.

The basic qualification is S.S.C. with or without science background. Other requirements include proficiency in computer operation and internet browsing, willing to dedicate minimum 2 hours every day for the course work.

What is the course syllabus?

The course includes 6 chapters on following topics. The chapters are illustrated and written in English.

  1. Introduction to insects and classification
  2. Butterflies, moths, dragonflies and damselflies
  3. Grasshoppers, crickets, cockroaches and praying mantis
  4. Stick Insects and leaf insects
  5. Wasps, bees, ants, termites, bugs and beetles
  6. Importance of insects: Economical and ecological

What is the course schedule?

The course duration is six months (July 2017- December 2017). 

Course Schedule:

This course will contain online assignment submission, which includes online research, field work and nature activity once a month.

Five field visits and one field camp will be organized during the course duration.

Grading structure:

Every month’s assignment will have 20 Total marks. Out of these marks 10 marks will be assigned to field visit or a camp and 6 marks will be assigned to online research / activity. 4 marks are given for the project work, which includes collecting data of insect diversity in your area every month. Total marks at the end of the session will be out of 100. Participation certificate will be provided to all the participants of the course. Every participant is expected to attend at least three of the six field visits/camp.

What is the course fee structure?

Course fees is Rs.10,000/-. The fee includes course inaugural camp in Mumbai & course wrap-up camps at CEC, Mumbai. Costs of transportation and outstation camps are not included.

Dr. Raju Kasambe is the Course Co-ordinator, Ms. Bhagyashree Grampurohit and Mr. Omkar Joshi are Education officers will be the Course Executive.
